Experimental Workshop: furnishing a broch
Get Involved! Experimental Archaeology Workshops, 1st to 5th July 2019
Next week we will be carrying out experiments into how the interior of the Clachtoll broch may have been floored. We will be making wicker panels of hazel and willow, similar to those likely to have formed the upper floors and internal galleries of the broch. We know wicker was used extensively in Iron Age buildings, and charcoal recovered from our excavations shows it was a major part of the interior of Clachtoll broch too.
We’ll be making our own wicker panels and testing various ways that they could have been used in the broch. Join us to learn more about Iron Age building techniques and for a glimpse into how Clachtoll broch may have looked 2000 years ago.
